Fighting the Small Business Inferiority Complex

Here at Entrust Bankcard, we believe in fighting for small businesses and helping entrepreneurs achieve their goals. Every small business has potential and you shouldn’t let anything stand in the way of your business’ success. That’s why blogger Rohit Bhargava caught our attention recently when wrote a piece called, “3 Ways To Fight The Small Business Inferiority Complex.” He makes excellent points about how a perceived lack of size, perceived lack of experience and perceived lack of resources can stifle your confidence as a small business owner. The best part, though, is that he also lays out ways to address these issues for your potential customers, your staff, and yourself as well. Read a few of the highlights here:

How To Fight Perceived Lack of Size:
There are only 2 strategies to truly fight this
1. Pretend to be bigger than you are. Do not lie, just don’t change your customer’s likely assumptions that your company is more than just yourself.
2. Make size the enemy. You could go the opposite route and give your customers a reason why you are better because you are smaller. Size doesn’t always matter and you need to come up with a proposal for your customers on why your size is beneficial to them. You could say you’re locally located, you’re not faceless, offer personalized attention and overall higher quality of service.

How To Fight Perceived Lack of Experience:
Demonstrate that you and your staff have been working in your field for longer than your company has been around. Just because your business has only been established for a short amount of time, doesn’t mean you aren’t armed with a wealth of experience to suite their needs.

How To Fight Perceived Lack of Resources:
If you take on a customer with greater needs than your company is used to dealing with, show them that you are capable of the larger volume. Be prepared to handle these types of customers way before they emerge. You need to know exactly what you’ll need to make it happen, whether it be increased staff or production, so that you can be ready.
